I believe every designer needs to explore passion projects and ideas on as regular a basis as possible, too often when working on client projects you're constrained to not "colouring outside the lines" or the client is afraid to take some design risks, or simply your client has a very vivid idea of what they would like, so it's a lot of fun flexing the design muscles and guiding the project exactly how you see fit.
I have a process for designing all materials, for logos I always start on paper, sketch as many ideas as possible and see which ones are worth exploring, then take it to Adobe Illustrator to make more high fidelity designs, then this logo was taken to Photoshop to add the texture.
